Black Girl, Green Earth
Educate. Mentor. Inspire.
Alexis C. Harris, Founder of BGGE:
“Growing up in Unincorporated DeKalb County, I witnessed the direct effects of environmental racism. I often wondered why when I drove down the street to the City of Decatur, viewing parks, sidewalks, and recreational areas FAR more beautiful than that of ours. Environmental Justice is a human right! No one should have to live in a toxic, contaminated environment because of the color of their skin or socioeconomic status. I’m doing this for the people who grew up like me and didn’t know they could be the ones to make a change. I’m doing this for the children that now have asthma because of factories being dumped around their home. I’m doing this because it is my calling!
Many citizens are unaware of the power they have to make change - Change to policy that directly affects their daily lives and health. Knowledge and understanding starts with the community! Through this organization I want to help educate and inspire young Black girls in my community on how to advocate for themselves for a better, cleaner environment.
I’m so excited for you all to join me on this journey!”
